Mario Olmos Banquet

Every year, the Central Valley Chapter of La Raza Lawyers Association (LRLA) sponsors a banquet during which the organization awards scholarships to deserving law students.  In 1990 after the untimely death of Superior Court Judge Mario G. Olmos, LRLA dedicated the banquet to his memory. Judge Olmos was a local jurist who was widely respected for his intellect, judicial temperament, and compassion for others.  Judges Olmos grew up in a farmworker family in Kingsburg, California.  He graduated from Boalt Hall and worked for the California Rural Legal Assistance in Madera, California before being elected to the Parlier/Selma Justice Court in 1977.  In 1982 he was appointed to the Fresno County Superior Court where he was elected Presiding Judge three consecutive years.  In 1988 Judge Olmos passed away prematurely at the age of 42. In 2007, as a result of efforts by LRLA and other community organizations, Mario G. Olmos Elementary School opened in Fresno, California.  The annual Olmos Scholarship Banquet is another way LRLA ensures that Judge Olmos’ legacy endures.

The 2009 Banquet will be held on Saturday March 7, 2009, at International Catering 4227 N. West Ave. Fresno, CA 93705. Our 2009 Keynote Speaker will be Justice Arthur Gilbert, Presiding Justice of Division Six of the California Court of Appeal, Second District.
