The Mario G. Olmos Scholarship Banquet
LRLA’s 2009 Mario G. Olmos Memorial Scholarship Banquet was held at International Catering in Fresno and was a big success, with approximately 250 guests attending. In 2009 the association awarded a total of $8,000 in scholarships: three $1,000 scholarships in memory of Judge Olmos, two $1,000 scholarships in memory of Michael McGonigle, a $1,000 scholarship in memory of Elvira Dominguez and George Cajiga, and a $2,000 scholarship in memory of Albert T. Ramirez, Sr. Congratulations to the 2009 recipients, Rafael Albarran, Sulma Guzman Alfaro, Brandon Brazil, Lorena Garcia, David Ibarra, L. Carmen Ramirez, and Esmeralda Soria.
Our local chapter of the California La Raza Lawyers Association, www.larazalawyers.net, is known as the Central Valley Chapter. In 2009 we celebrated the 30th anniversary of our local LRLA Chapter. In honor of this occasion we invited all the founding members we could locate to attend the banquet. During the Banquet our chapter’s founding President, Commissioner Phillip Silva, provided a short history on how our chapter was founded. Founding members present were acknowledged during Commissioner Silva’s speech and a commemorative picture was taken.
The 2010 Mario G. Olmos Scholarship Banquet will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at International Catering, 4227 N. West Street,. Fresno, CA. Evy Ramos, morning co-anchor for KGPE-CBS47 TV, will be the Mistress of Ceremonies. The Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Luz Gonzalez, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, Fresno State. Associate Justice Steven Vartabedian, Cal. Court of Appeal, 5th District, will be the Guest Speaker. Mariachi Garibaldi will provide the pre-dinner musical entertainment and the night will again be capped off with a dance. Tickets are $50 per reservation or $360 for a Table of 8. We are looking forward to another successful banquet in 2010. I hope you will again join us in honoring the memory of Judge Olmos and providing scholarships to worthy law students.
